Torrevieja ligger lige syd for Alicante ud til Costa Blanca's strande. På grund af beliggenheden i ly af Sirra Nevada bjergene har Alicante det bedst tænkelige klima med ca. 320 solskinsdage om året. Luften er generelt rent og tørt. I år 2000 fik Torrevieja miljøprisen for at være Spaniens mest rene by. Luftforureningen er minimal, da Torrevieja ikke har nogen industri ud over saltudvindingen, der ikke kræver fossile brændstoffer.

Torrevieja, situated next to the sea in the south of the Valencian Community, is surrounded by two large natural saltwater lagoons which form the well-known "Saltens of Torrevieja" considered the biggest In Europe. 47 kms. from Alicante, the provincial capital, and about 35 kms. from the airports or El Altet and San Javier, it stands out for its conversion in recent years into a first-class tourist centre. Its climate Is dry and equable throughout the year with 360 days of sun and an average temperature of 18C.

Among its welcoming and attractive features are the magnificent beaches of fine sand, squares, walks, parks, gardens and natural beauty spots (Ferriz), historical monuments (the modernist Casino dates from the beginning of the century and has a famous hall in the mozarabic style; the "Recinto de las Eras de la Sal", an open, air theatre), both in the town and the hinterland. All this with innumerable services given over to serving tourism, from a hospitable, Ingenuous people, open to the cultures of the world because of its long coastal sea-faring and deep-sea fishing tradition, and now sports sailing.

Torrevieja was the home port of the largest fleet of sailing-boats In the Mediterranean, and preserves the last specimens of up to the middle of the present century. The many real estate developments, residential complexes, recreational areas and spaces for a tranquil life and at the same time for both relaxation and amusement, are examples of the reputable touristy service, shown by the outstanding preference of the worlds tourists for the City of Salt.

Among the opportunities for recreation, relaxation and amusement, the town places at the disposal of all its visitors one of the best Yacht Clubs in Spain, tennis and golf clubs, a flying club a municipal sports centre (with covered courts, tennis, fronton, athletics and sauna), as well as its specialty, par excellence, which Is everything related to water sports with magnificent installations which have even been home to the pre-Olympic trials for 1992, with more than 1.500 berths with the corresponding complementary services. There is also a municipal football stadium, bull ring, water park, fairground, theatre, several cinemas, etc.

As far as culture and festivals are concerned, everything related to "Las Habaneras" must be highlighted: these tropical, rhythmical songs, which have come via the salt trade with Cuba, In the voices of the Torreviejan sailors, recount among their numerous exploits the creation of "la Habanera".

So every August the unrivalled Torreviejan swings for a week to the 2 x 4 rhythm through its Habaneras and Polyphonic international competitions, which attract the attention of hundreds of thousands of people who watch them live or on television. The fiestas of the patron saint are dedicated to Immaculate Conceptions from 1 to 17 December.
